On April 20, 2006, Eagles Breakaway hosted its first conference in Kingston, Jamaica. Entitled "Lift Self, Lift Yaad", the conference aimed to empower young Jamaicans with the knowledge they need to make more informed decisions about their educational future.
The day ran successfully with nearly 60 young people from around the island participating in an event made up of inspirational talks and interactive workshops.
Individual thanks
A large number of individuals graciously gave up their time both on the day and in the preparatory weeks before to help make the conference a success. Some were speakers at the event, giving their advice on a range of topics affecting young Jamaicans, whereas others were invaluable in an organisational capacity. While not all can be thanked here, a big thanks goes out to:
- Ann-Marie Astwood, Cable & Wireless Jamaica Foundation
- Christine Clarke, PhD candidate in Economics at Rice University
- Kevin Ellis, 1st year student at UWI Faculty of Medicine
- Dr. Wesley Hughes, Planning Institute of Jamaica
- Carrel Kerr, 2nd year student at UWI Faculty of Pure and Applied Mathematics
- Dr. Garth McDonald, St. Joseph's Hospital
- Leighton Morrison, 2nd year student at UWI Faculty of Social Sciences
- Ruth-Ann Myers, 2nd year student at UWI Faculty of Medicine
- Jaevion Nelson, 2nd year student at UWI Faculty of Social Sciences
Thanks to organisations
This successful conference would not have been possible without the kind support of a number of organisations who generously offered their time and resources to the cause.
